Moving back and forth between a romantic realism inspired by American landscape painters of the 19th century and abstraction and pop art, I am drawn to photographing man-made, perhaps mundane everyday objects, juxtaposed against the seemingly bucolic natural environment. I am interested in creating work that removes nature and objects from their traditional role as descriptive landscape into one that allows the viewer to respond to the images in a couple of different ways: on a formal level as abstract form and color; and/or as metaphor that represents different ideas that I am wrestling with at any given time and trying to communicate to the viewer. There is a surreal quality to the images that hopefully provokes the viewer to respond to the objects and their environments in a fresh way. By using symbolic forms and color along with realistic, familiar elements, I am exploring the connection between nature and geometry; the organic and the abstract; the idea that when attention is drawn to the ordinary that one might take for granted, the ordinary can become a poetic comment on what it means to live in our culture, in our time.
